Solitude or Alone?

All human beings are alone. No other person will completely feel like we do, think like we do, act like we do. We are each unique, and our oneness is the other side of our uniqueness. The question is whether we let our aloneness become loneliness or whether we allow it to lead us into solitude. Being on our own to contemplate is not a sign of weakness.  It allows for more personal introspection that is healthy and growing. Loneliness is painful and raw; solitude is peaceful and quiet. Loneliness makes us cling to others in desperation; solitude allows us to understand that others are unique and we create community.  May we find the moments of quiet solitude, within and without…..

Thank you to Henri Nouwen for his thoughts and the chance to add some of my own comments…A wondrous author of peace and compassion.
